Fall Cleanup: Small Steps, Less Clutter

Decluttering doesn't have to mean emptying every closet or spending an entire weekend sorting belongings. Start with one small space and a short session. Even fifteen minutes can make a difference.

1. Start where life happens

Choose the entryway, kitchen counter, or favorite sitting area. Clear walkways and remove items that no longer belong there. Focus on making the space easier to enjoy — not perfect.

2. Sort into four simple groups

Keep, donate, recycle, and discard. Set aside a separate box for items that belong elsewhere so you don't get sidetracked moving from room to room.

3. Let the season guide you

As you bring out sweaters and seasonal decorations, notice what you actually use. Donate clean, usable items you no longer need, and check your local donation center's acceptance rules before dropping them off.

4. Handle memories gently

You don't have to decide the future of every keepsake today. Photograph meaningful items, share their stories with loved ones, or choose a few favorites to display. Ask family members before setting things aside for them.

5. Finish with one next step

Put a donation pickup or drop-off on the calendar. A sorted bag by the door is a good start; getting it to its destination is what frees up the space.

Leave heavy lifting, ladders, and hard-to-reach cleaning to someone who can help safely. The goal is a more comfortable home, not an exhausting project.
